This is a great intro project but also a fantastic ‘hack-able’ design because of its simplicity, if you are more advanced.
Here are the hacks I made:
- welt zipper pocket centered on one side
-instead of the strapping that comes with the kit, I used daisy chain tacked to the bag through the connection points and shortened the loops.
- I added a zipper across the top to close it
- because of the daisy chain and zippers the bag is more travel friendly since everything is lockable
- I slightly changed the size of the notch so the bottom is deeper (8” now)
- added D rings at the top corners and the bottom corners on one side that allow the original strapping that comes with the kit to be used as a cross body strap or when threaded through the daisy chain, turn it into a back pack for shorter carry, with the addition of a slider and swivel lobster claw clasps
- added loops to the non-pocket side for elastic cording so a jacket could be cinched to it
Now looks a lot like something you’d buy on Huckberry.

Really enjoyed this project- came out great and I learned a lot. Already made some more from the same concept with other types of fabric.
We love to hear that Michael! Thanks for leaving us a review and enjoy your new tote bag(s)!
This tote is easy to make yet looks like you bought it! I added some internal pouches and a buckle closure to mine and use it at the gym. Can’t wait to use it at the lakes this summer!
We love the additions you made to the Tote Bag Kit! We'd love to see some photos of it in action, be sure to tag us on social media!
The white material looks great and makes a super functional bag. The size is more useful than the grocery bag size. I think adding an internal zipper pocket or key hook would be very useful.
Thanks for the review and helpful tip Aaron! A key hook or zipper pocket would be extra useful in this big tote!
