We founded Ripstop by the Roll because we were tired of settling for mass-produced products and more importantly, for what someone else put in front of us. If you don’t like the way things are, then you have the power to change it. 

One of the things that we've talked about recently is the desire to create more ECO friendlyproducts. We've already patterned with other like-minded brands such as DSM with BIO-Based Dyneema, Challenge with ECOPAK, and Dimension Polyant with 100% climate neutral manufacturing. But since these products only represent a small portion of what we do at RBTR, we felt like there was more to be done.

That’s why we’re very excited to announce that effective immediately, we’ll be working to transition ALL of our new and existing materials to a 100% PFC/PFAS-free Durable Water Repellent finish. 

Now if you’re not familiar with the term DWR, basically this is the stuff that gets put on a fabric to make water bead up, run off, and keep you dry when you’re doing the things that you love to do - whether that’s backpacking, climbing, biking, or some other activity. 

So water resistance is good - thank you DWR for that - but there’s a problem, which is that traditional DWR formulations use chemicals called PFCs or perfluorocarbons to be exact, that put simply are not that great for the environment. 

They take a long time to break down in nature and end up in things like our waterways, wildlife, and even our bodies. 

By working to eliminate PFCs from the DWR that we use in our fabrics, we’re taking one more step in the direction of sustainability and frankly just common sense decision making. We also don’t think that DIYers and small businesses should have to settle for anything less than equal access to the fabrics, materials, and technologies that big brands are already using. 

So a lot more to come on this initiative very soon, including details on how we’ll be managing it given how large of an undertaking it is, but we’re really excited to get started and we look forward to sharing with you along the way.
