Starting from a 40L Bag Buff pattern I modified the side pockets, back panel, straps, and hip belt. I also added to the backpack a slot to route hydration blatter tubes. After I made this backpack I decided that it needed a chest pack for quick access storage. I have made a lot of hip packs and other small bags so I started from a pattern that I had already created. I made the chest pack interface with the hip belt of the pack to make a hip pack for shorter hikes and days away from basecamp. The chest pack is about 3L and features a slot for the hip belt, dual-layer back panel (3D Mesh and X-Pac VX15 to make it truly waterproof), hidden internal pockets for passports, and ID cards, mesh pockets for organization, and a spacious .75L front pocket.
I started by modifying and redesigning a lot of features in the Bag Buff pattern. Then cut and sew the rest. The chest pack I made from the ground up. I started with a pattern and a few prototypes then moved to final construction. This little bag has more layers than you would expect.
