I made a new tent with a Silnylon top (tarp) and 1.0 dyneema bathtub floor for the floor with .65 mesh all from RSBR and it came out great. Only 18.7 oz with tons of room for one and plenty of room for two with relaxed floors. I’m very excited to use it on the trail this year and expect it will work well and be plenty durable. The dyneema was very easy to sew and work with.
Excellent fabric and excellent service.
Product has been great, but 1 star off because there were blue felt layout lines on each layout line from when the material was cut off the roll. This had to be cleaned with some chemical strippers, which I hope didn't damage the laminate glues.
I purchased a full roll of the 0.34 Oz Dyneema Composite Fabric. This was about 30% more than I needed for my project. But the wholesale price meant it wasn't much more to get the full roll. My thinking was that I would put the extra fabric to use on other, yet to be determined projects. The problem is that 0.34 oz DCF is very specialized and considered too light and subject to damage for most applications. I am having to triple reinforce stress points and bench test each of these joints to be sure they will work. Although tensile strength is good, slitting and puncture strength is week. Wrinkling is a factor that does not come into the strength calculations but is an important consideration that can only be observed with testing. The orientation of the fibers between layers and joins is important. Cutting is difficult and requires special scissors (don't work well) or hot knife. Best to keep your cuts perpendicular to the fabric. If perpendicular, then a stich removal tool works well. Sewing is questionable, as the stitches pull the fibers when stressed. Glue works much better (when there is a generous overlap. Most of the above is just learning about the fabrics properties and how to use it.
Regarding the service, Ripstop focuses on efficient delivery and will not accept changes, other than cancellation to orders once placed. So, this puts extra pressure on making a perfect order and also results in additional shipping for last minute changes. I was also surprised that my thousand dollar order was shipped in a plastic bag, a box would have been more appropriate. However, I am pleased that this product is available, as it is highly specialized and hard to source. Would be even better if Ripstop was able to keep their Dyneema website products in stock; as many are sold out and different colours are not an option. Thereby having to settle for whatever colour is in stock. So, the DCF can only be used for utilitarian applications, no option to a...
