  • The MEMBRANEsil line was developed with one goal in mind - create the lightest, most waterproof fabrics on the market

Same silpoly benefits of lower water absorption and increased UV resistance, but in a waterproof textile that's 15-30% lighter than traditional lightweight coated nylon/polyester fabrics.

MEMBRANE Silpoly PU4000 is the high water resistance version of our MEMBRANE silpoly line of ultralight coated materials. To achieve high water resistance with low-stretch, the material features the following:

    • 15D polyester plain-weave construction
    • High-quality sil/PU coating on one side and multi-pass PU4000 coating on the other

MEMBRANE Silpoly PU4000 is best for situations where you want to save weight, but still have the highest water resistance possible. The PU4000 coating also allows seams to be taped and reduces bias stretch making the material somewhat easier to sew.

A premium material for all projects requiring an extremely lightweight, waterproof textile. Common applications include tarps* (see note below), ponchos, gear sacks, pack covers, etc.

*Note - If using for a tarp, please keep in mind that this material pushes the limit on weight, waterproofness, and durability. We do not recommend use outside of relatively low-stress applications.

*This fabric has distinct shiny (PU4000) and matte (sil/PU) sides. It is recommended to put the matte side facing out and shiny side facing inwards. If seam sealing, we recommend using a PU sealant such as Seam-Grip on the PU4000 side of the fabric.

really nice fabric on yellow

bought this for an ultralight tent with the intent of using it as a floor for it's waterproofness. It looks and feels good, however it might be too thin, but I'll go for it and use a groundsheet to protect it more.

Initial Impression

Exactly what I was hoping for with respect to weight and feel. I will be using to make a vapor liner for keeping my quilt dry when sleeping in a bivy bag, a rain kilt, and a pack cover.

Nice, used for splash bivy

Used this to make a simple splash bivy for extra protection under my Gatewood Cape tarp. I folded the long sides to the centerline but only sewed a simple footbox: The foot end is closed and the long centerline seam only sewn up about a foot. The rest is just folded into the centerline. In good weather it is just a double layer below me. But if the weather turns bad, I can slip into the footbox and fold an upwind side flap over myself. On the head end I sewed on a piece of 0.5 oz noseeum netting. It stays under me also but if the bugs come out I flip it over me. There is a suspension point to pull it away from my face. Just over 7 oz with the sack, inexpensive, and a grand total of three straight seams. Didn't have any issue handling or sewing the material. Thought is worked well.

Good material; not ripstop

I used this to make a simple groundsheet/cape and it is excellent, being light and packing small whilst being strong and easy(ish) to work, The khaki colour is a sort of greenish sand and a good choice to avoid greens and camos whilst still being discreet but not looking military. In this colour it is almost transparent but, if crumpled up in a stuffsack, it gives the impression of being opaque in use. It is not ripstop in construction (which saves weight) but seems robust and the silicone surface doesn't particularly attract thorns. Moisture beads but doesn't run or shake off particularly, although this may improve over time. Out of the box, it does what it says on the label.

Hey Rawdon. Thanks for the review! We hope the Membrane continues to work well for you. Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.
